Is moss damaging your roof tiles?

Moss can cause real damage to roof tiles by growing in between the interlocking sections and pushing them out of place allowing water to find its way internally.

Once this happens the membrane below the tiles starts to degrade until finally roof battens rot and tiles break, crack and slip.

If the moss is not attended to at this stage then water ingress will start to attack roof trusses and joists which then becomes structural.

Moss removal is not a difficult job, although there is definitely a right and a wrong way to tackle it.

So, what’s the best way to remove roof moss?

We believe that the safest and most effective way to tackle roof moss is to gently scrape it down, top to bottom using specially designed stainless steel scraping tool heads which are precisely made to fit the many different types of tile profile that we face.

The heads are attached to a lightweight, ridged telescopic pole. It is vitally important that scraping is not carried out too aggressively especially if on slates as damaging the tiles fragile surface must be avoided at all costs. The scraping down process is carried out either from ground level, ladders or mobile scaffold towers.

The next stage, if required by the customer, and highly recommended, it to softwash the entire roof using a trade biocide. The roof is saturated in this effective solution which continues to clean the roof long after the scraping is completed. The biocide eventually kills off all lichen and any remaining moss which may be left trapped in-between roof tiles. The biocide also prevents the moss from returning for much longer than other typical cleaning methods.

Whilst Softwashing starts going to work the moment it is applied; it is not an instant result. Instead softwashing works over a period of months. However, it is the safest and kindest way to clean moss from a tiled or slated roof. The biocide will keep your roof moss free from re-growth for up to five years (depending on atmospheric conditions).

Result

Result

The results that we are able to achieve are remarkable and will transform the look of your house. Our customers are amazed at the results time and time again. Moss is bad news which serves no positive purpose. Once cleaned your tiles can again benefit from the sun and dry out which will help preserve them and give them longevity protecting you from the Great British weather.

Premier Gutter & Roof Cleaning NEVER recommends the use of a power washer to clean moss from tiles or slated roofs. Whilst this method may offer instant results, it can and does crack and damage roof tiles and fragile felt below and can cause internal leaks.

The benefits of soft washing are –

  1. It does not damage your roof tiles/slates or cause internal leaks.
  2. It will restore the appearance of your roof, giving it a fresh look once again.
  3. It will improve your roofs longevity.
  4. It can help you lower your energy bills as moss could be impacting your insulation.
  5. It can potentially save you many hundreds of pounds should the moss start to crack your tiles and destroy mortar joints on ridges, valley gutters and hips ends.

We apply a covering of trade de-greaser which is brushed into the existing roofs top coat and left for around 15mins. We then use a lightly set power washer get it clean.

The roof will start looking great once this process is completed. Some customers however, like us to follow on this treatment and complete a full rejuvenation. This entails the following –

Roof Cleaning

Rejuvenation

Once the roof is cleaned, the complete area is lightly sanded and all dust removed. The roof is then cleaned with acetone before a fresh coat of quality resin is applied all over. Once the resin has dried, the roof is again cleaned with acetone before a brand-new top coat is applied to the whole roof. This process gives the roof much more longevity and greatly improves the need for a potential re-roof which is very costly.

Excellent Service

“Really pleased with the service we had from this company from start to finish. We were kept informed, the roofers arrived on time, were polite and cheerful, and the old fibreglass roof was stripped down and a new one applied within the two days quoted. An excellent job was done in replacing an old, poor-quality roof with a brilliant new one which I could not fault in any way. Great piece of work!”
